Southern Living was waiting for me in the mailbox yesterday.  

 Perused it this morning with a cup of coffee.

 Todays project!

 2 cans of Regal Red spray paint

+ 6 new plants

= Fired up fall front porch!

Brown pots are now red!

 The front door got painted yellow last summer.

Home Depot had everything I needed. 

 Can hardly wait to add the pumpkins in October!

I had a wonderful Sunday! 

Taking a break...

I just sat down with a glass of sweet tea to take a little break.  How on earth can teacher workdays leave me so exhausted?  Students begin on Monday. I will be forgoing my daily blogging posts and Pinterest perusing and be back to my weekly Sunday morning post.  Oh, the withdrawal symptoms I am going to have!

Dorm Room: Sophomore Year

Moved my Maddie back to college for her second year today.  She was asked to be an orientation leader at the last minute, so she moved in about 9 days earlier than we were expecting.  Yesterday was a whirlwind of errands and packing of the car!  I didn't get the pictures I wanted to get of the room.  It was getting late and she had to get to the dining hall before it shut down.  Her roommate can't move in till next week so only half the room is done.  She was ready for us to leave anyway!  

 Head board was from last year. Just recovered with drop cloth fabric we stenciled and painted a monogram on.  It is attached with large wire ties around the regular legs of the bed frame.

 All of the embroidery hooped fabrics were reused this year as well as the wire bird memo holder.

Pieced together for $4

How do you add character to a dorm room when you can't really hang anything heavy on the walls? (They don't let you use nails!)  If Command hooks don't hold it up, you are just out of luck!  Those rooms are also really tiny!  Here is a little piece we put together to be free standing.  My daughter had something very similar pinned from Pinterest on her boards.  It will be a beside light and night stand for my daughters dorm room.  The two little shelves are for her iphone and Nook.  All parts to make this were thrifted for a total cost of $4.00 plus little handy work from dad!

Removed the inner lid from the mason jar  and fitted it with a plastic circle
 that had a whole in it that just fit over the socket.

Hubby drilled a hole so the cord could go down the back.

Hubby added feet and two half circle shelves.

I paid $1.21 for this Ikea wall light at a thrift shop.

This long cabinet door had been at Habitat Restore
 for over 90 days so I got it discounted to $2.50.

We move her back to school on Thursday.  I will have lots of pictures on Friday!

Dorm room headboards!

My daughter is heading back to college next week!  She has a new roommate this year and is part of a suite.  Oh yeah, an extra room to decorate!  Both girls wanted to use the same stuff they had last year.  So we had to figure out a few new things that we could do to blend their stuff for this new room.

I had purchased two padded head boards last year for $5 dollars at a thrift store, covered them in blue, and then wire tied them to the college issued bed frames.  This year, we are covering them again with fabric that we stenciled ourselves.

 We looked and looked for two fabrics with the same pattern but in two different colors.  No Luck!
We needed something to go with yellow, black, white, and grey for he roommate.  Maddie needed to Melon, teal, or green to match her stuff.  We decided to stencil drop cloth in colors that would work.
Our first time stenciling!  Not that bad!  My daughter did most of it herself.

 Of course it needed monograms!  Monograms are very popular with the college girls now.  Maddie worked out the lettering on the computer.  I pinned the paper pattern to the head board and used a sharpie to bleed dots onto the fabric.  I connected the dots and then she painted in the lettering.

Here is the finished product! 

 Melon orange for Maddie and her room mate's is school bus yellow.

We have a little more revamping to work on before next week.

Maddie called home one day and said that a friend stopped by her dorm room to introduce her to a a friend who was visiting.  They were just in the door way when the visiting girl says "OMG!  I have this room pinned on Pinterest!"

I had the most perfect day! 

 I started on this piece at 7:30 AM, and worked until 9:30 PM, stopping only to eat.

It was heaven to play with paint an entire day!

Art for 7 days!

Day 1

I have been following several blogs by artists this summer.  Trish and Pam are doing a 30 days and 30 paintings self challenge.  I have thought about it all week, each day getting a little more excited about the prospect of really diving into my artwork again.  This summer has flown by much too fast for me ...I only have two weeks left before school starts back up!

I don't think I can commit to 30 days but I would like to think I could do 7 days!  So here goes!
This was a 12 X 3 stretched canvas that I did a mosaic on using cut up paint swatch cards.

A quick pillow project.  I used rubber stamps and permanent ink to do the numbers.

My sunflower is fading...

I have enjoyed my first giant sunflower but after two weeks inside it is starting to fade.  I was about to through it out.  I went to plunk it in the trash can and noticed how cool the petal and sepals were at this stage.  The camera and light box was already set up so I thought I would play with the camera and get up close and personal with this sunflowers last glimmer.
